Why do only older students have to be role models for younger students? (Aichi Prefecture, 6th grader)

Teachers Are Counting on You

That's a tough question! I'd say it's because if only the teacher gives instructions or acts as a role model, it doesn't really help the kids learn on their own. There are so many things to learn at school. You study subjects like math and social studies, but you also learn things that can't be taught in class alone — like helping a friend who's in trouble, or cleaning up after your activities. That's why teachers have a lot to teach. And even if only the teacher acts as a role model, it's not very convincing.

For example, if everyone in town crossed the street on a red light, you might think, "Hmm, maybe it's okay to ignore the traffic light?" Human beings are funny that way — even smart people and kind-hearted people can get swept along by what everyone around them is doing. So the more people there are who behave the right way, the more convincing it becomes. And since older students are generally smarter than younger ones and are better at understanding how the teacher feels, teachers may end up counting on the older kids without even realizing it.
