How can I start doing homework I really don't want to do?" (4th Grader, Tokyo)

Doing It With Friends Makes It Easier!

I know exactly how you feel! I also have a habit of putting off things I don't want to do.

In your case, why don't you want to do your homework? Is it because you don't see the point of it? Or maybe it's just a huge pain? There could be lots of reasons, but in the end, nothing will get done unless you actually start.

When you have to do something you really don't want to do, the most important thing is to give yourself a little "push" to get started. I think there are two ways to get that push: The first way is something you can do by yourself, and for the second way, you can give yourself that push with others.

A good way to give yourself that push by yourself is to take a notebook and spend 10 minutes writing down exactly why you don't want to do your homework. Doing this helps clear your head and sort out your feelings. Once your feelings are sorted, it becomes a lot easier to stop putting things off and actually get to work.

A good way to get that push with someone else is to do that annoying homework together! Every Tuesday and Friday, I get on a video call with a friend so we can work on writing our big papers at the same time. When you tackle something you don't want to do with a friend, it feels like you have a sidekick, and it makes the whole thing a bit easier.

I highly recommend giving it a try!
