Why do we have to do group activities? (Tokyo, 5th grader)

Every Student Can Learn

One reason teachers make students do group activities might be that it makes the teachers' jobs easier since they have less to do. But I think that's not always the reason. Sometimes, working in a group creates opportunities to learn for everyone in the group.

For example, when I was in graduate school, I had to turn in homework with another student in my statistics class. I'm good at math, so I ended up helping the other student a lot. By teaching statistics to others, I think I understood it even better myself. In other words, without that group work, my understanding of statistics might have stayed shallow. It's hard to teach or help other people unless you understand something at a deep level. That's why I'm really thankful for that group work system. And because I reached a level where I could teach statistics, I got a lot more job opportunities after that.

So, when group activities go well, maybe both the person helping and the person being helped can learn something. :)
