What happens to our minds and hearts when we die? (4th Grader, Tokyo)

Your Thoughts and Heart Will Live On

I think that, when someone dies, their mind becomes "nothing." But since I have never experienced "nothingness," I don't really know what that feels like. However, I believe that the feelings and thoughts of people who have passed away keep living in this world in a different shape. For example, I recently read a poem called "If I Must Die" by a Palestinian poet, Refaat Alareer, and it touched my heart deeply. This poem has been translated into more than 70 languages and is read by people all over the world.

Dr. Alareer sadly passed away in Israel's ongoing genocide against Palestinian people. But his heart and thoughts — his message to "fight with words" — will stay in the hearts of people everywhere forever.

I think this is true for everyone, whether they are famous or not. As we live, we meet many different people and we all leave a mark on one another. So, even when you pass away someday, your own thoughts and feelings will continue to live on in this world, too.

考えや気持ちは残る

人は死んでしまったら、その人の心は無になると思う。でも私は「無」を経験したことがないから、「心が無になる」とはどういう感覚なのかはわからない。でも、死んでしまった人の「気持ち」や「考え」は、この世に形を変えて存在し続けると思う。例えば、私は最近パレスチナの詩人リファアト・アルアリイールさんの有名な詩「If I must die（もし私が死ななければならないのなら）」を読んでとても感動した。この詩は70以上の言語にやくされ、世界中の人に読まれている。アルアリイールさんは今も続くパレスチナ・イスラエル戦争によって亡くなってしまった。でもアルアリイールさんの「言葉で戦おう」という気持ちや考えは、世界中の人の心に残り続けるだろう。それは有名な人も、有名じゃない人も同じだと思う。生きているといろいろな人に出会い、影響しあう。だから君がいつか死んでしまっても、君の考えや気持ちはこの世に残り続けるんじゃないかな。
