Why Do We Have to Do Group Work? (Tokyo, 5th Grade)

One reason teachers might have students work in groups is to make their own jobs easier. When students form groups, those who are good at leading or explaining things can step up and handle tasks the teacher would normally have to do. While teachers might sometimes ask us to work in groups just to save time, there’s another important reason too.

Like Kono-san said, group work creates learning opportunities. For example, when I took a statistics class in graduate school, we had to submit group homework. Since I was good at math, I ended up helping my group members. But guess what? Teaching statistics to others actually helped me understand it even more deeply. If we hadn’t worked in groups, I might not have learned the material as well.

So, when group work goes smoothly, both the helper and the person being helped can learn something new. Cool, isn’t it?

班行動を生徒にさせると、先生のすることが減って仕事が楽になるのも理由の一つかもしれない。それは、班になると、リーダーシップをとるのが上手い人や、教えるのが上手な人が力を発揮して、先生が本来しないといけない仕事をやってくれるからだ。このようにして先生が楽をしたいからと言う理由でグループ行動をやらせることもあるだろうけれど、そうでない時もあると思う。それは、コーノさんが言うように、グループ行動が学びの機会を作る時だ。例えば、私は大学院で統計学の授業をとったときに、グループで宿題を提出しないといけなかった。私は数学が得意だから、同じ班の人を助けないといけなくなったんだけど、他の人に統計学を教えることで、自分の理解がより深くなったと思う。このグループワークがなければ、私の統計学の理解は浅いままだったかもしれない。このようにして、班行動は、上手くいけば、助ける側も、助けられる側も学べるのかもしれないね。
